I had an amazing learning experience at Spanish Adventure. As both journalist and songwriter in America, I had a strong command of English and understand the tricks and nuances necessary for effective language instruction. The school is family-owned and operated, and they work within the community to provide authentic experiences for students to learn Spanish. For example, we visited a small local coffee farm not far from the school and learned the entire process of growing organic coffee. The experience was mostly in Spanish and a great opportunity to get to know more about a neighbor and local business. The Spanish grammar classes are also well planned and deliver necessary information about the Spanish language. I particularly enjoyed learning about past perfect and past imperfect verb tenses with Joan. He is a terrific instructor and very kind person.Truly, I can’t say enough great things about this school. The staff does an amazing job of providing quality teaching along with delivering the best outdoor adventures in San Carlos/ Antioquia. If you’re thinking about coming to school here, grab your boots and get ready to learn!!!

A really nice experience! The learning approach with clases, 1to1s, adventures and interaction with the comunity is really constructive. The teachers are very chummy, friendly as well as professional. The provided infrastructure is appropriate and the town of San Carlos is small, but provides everything you need in an authentic atmosphere without Gringos (apart from the students of the school :-)).

Excellent place to learn Spanish and have really exciting adventures! You meet lots of people travelling with the same mindset and can make some great friends. You’ll also meet Chispas the Pig ☺️The environment is very comfortable and the food is good! You can get 1-1 classes on top of daily classes which is super helpful. The environment is sooo beautiful as well!

I spent 3 weeks at Spanish Adventure and 100% recommend it to anyone traveling in Colombia or looking to learn Spanish through emersion.Facilities: Spanish adventure has great, modern facilities. You can choose from a dorm room, a private room with a shared bathroom, or a private room with a private bath. There is also a pool, fully stocked bar where you can purchase drinks, two modern kitchens (best I've seen of any hostel while traveling) and even an area with some weights and yoga mats where you can work out. The campus is located just a 20 minute walk from the main town square.Schedule: During the week we typically have classes in the morning for two hours and you can choose to do an additional hour of 1:1 tutoring. In addition we also have a project we’ll complete in groups throughout the week such as filming a short movie in Spanish or doing Colombian cooking. Every afternoon we have a different activity whether it’s a trek to swim in a waterfall or learning salsa. Saturday we have the big adventure which typically takes most of the day and is a larger activity like canyoning, tubing, or visiting a coffee farm. Usually on Saturday there are two adventures you can choose from.Classes: The classes at the school are kept very small, typically between 1-4 people. On the first day the teachers will assess your Spanish level to place you in a group. They don’t try to combine groups for efficiency, they will but you in a group by yourself if appropriate! I spent three weeks at Spanish Adventure and for the first two weeks I had private lessons. The teachers are all super dedicated to teacher and try to make it fun rather than teach in a super traditional style.San Carlos: San Carlos is a wonderful town! The downtown is just a quick walk or Tuk Tuk ride away and has everything you need from restaurants, to groceries, to coffee shops. Most people in the town do not speak English, allowing you to leverage your new Spanish skills! Furthermore, San Carlos is super safe, I never felt concerned going in a Tuk Tuk by myself, taking out cash from the ATM at night, and never even worried about being pickpocketed, which was refreshing after spending time in Medellin. It was a great place to get off the common tourist path and spend time in nature.Packages: You can choose a package by the week, and everything is included for a great price. With the package you get Spanish lessons, all activities, breakfast and lunch and accommodation all included. You also have the option to pay a bit extra (~$20) for daily 1:1 tutoring, which I highly recommend to solidify your Spanish learning.Volunteering: If you’re planning to stay at Spanish Adventure for three weeks or more you can apply to be a volunteer. During the volunteering you’ll choose a focus (teaching English, marketing, repairs around the school, etc.) and spend ~10 hours a week working and receive a discount on the Spanish packages (~40% discount). I did the English teaching volunteering which was super fun and rewarding!Overall, I couldn’t recommend Spanish Adventure more! Whether you’re looking to start learning Spanish, or already quite advanced it’s a great way to improve, make friends and spend time in nature off the typical tourist path!
